XASTHUR founder Scott Conner, an astute chronicler of the dark side of the American dream, has come to terms with the idea that his work can confuse people and be misread. He just accepts that reality now. This notion is clearly expressed in the title of his new work "Open to Misinterpretation". This insight has also firmed his resolve to neither change his artistic direction nor to attempt making his music easier for people to access. Conner is just not interested in chasing what has worked for other people or fitting neatly into a genre. This does not mean that XASTHUR are standing still. "Open to Misinterpretation" represents a deeper and more developed version of what Conner already does. He keeps honing his expression and to find new sounds and moods for his ideas. As a result, his songwriting has become equally more detailed as well as harder to predict at the same time. The production has audibly been cleared up, even though Conner still aims for the recording process to feel live, organic, and real. "Open to Misinterpretation" probably feels more complete because these songs have already been performed live on stage due to XASTHUR's prior touring activities on both sides of the Atlantic. With "Open to Misinterpretation", the American delivers a more focused and more confident album that realises the evolution and expression of Scott Conner's sound to a point that makes it harder to misunderstand this artist's intentions. Well, and if anyone does, he has come to accept it as an integral part of XASTHUR's music.

Guitars, who needs guitars in heavy music? At least YEAR OF THE COBRA can happily do without the ones that have only thin strings and are mostly good for fiddling around. Vocalist Amy Tung Barrysmith gets a massive groove and lush heaviness out of her bass, which is more than enough to fuel the booming twin engine made from doom metal and psychedelic sludge that drives their self-titled third full-length. "Year of the Cobra" has clearly grown out of its two forerunners "...in the Shadows Below" (2016) and "Ash and Dust" (2019), but it also surpasses them. YEAR OF THE COBRA have honed their songwriting, which is more to the point, and produces catchy yet super heavy tunes that are tailor-made to fit the band's strongest aspects. Amy Tung Barrysmith's rich alto and the seamless rhythmical rapport between her bass lines and Jon Barrysmith's emotive drumming come to the fore. YEAR OF THE COBRA were formed in Seattle in 2015. Anybody who has ever suffered from betrayal can relate to this album,...

...Antimatter-mainman Mick Moss states self-consciously about his most recent work, "The Judas Table". "I'm singing about my experiences, but I'm a firm believer that they are everybody else's experiences as well."

Throughout his life, Moss has repeatedly experienced disappointment on a personal level along with the self-doubt that goes with it. The deficiencies of human behaviour and social life have always been the proverbial red thread through his lyrics, but prior to "The Judas Table", a critical limit was exceeded for Moss. On Antimatter's sixth album, he accounts for different personal conflicts with an unusual, almost scientific poignancy and is harder on people from his immediate surroundings than ever, yet also on himself: "For 'The Judas Table' I gather together the various personalities of the people who's callous and disrespectful, backstabbing actions caused me countless wasted years of depression", he resumes. "For years I thought the problem was with me. I was always open and tried my best, but was nevertheless used and betrayed many times. This led me to believe I was worthless and must have deserved it. Now I realise the problem was with the clinically psychologically soulless people who treated me that way due to their nature, not mine."

The liberating and empowering conceptual approach is also reflected in the music. "The Judas Table" just like "Leaving Eden" and "Fear Of A Unique Identity" is essentially appealing due to its intense blend of melancholic Art Rock, dark Gothic and introspective acoustic pieces, but as a whole seems less nervous and restless than earlier records. The new Antimatter record appears to be calm and attests to a so far unfamiliar inner peace, an equilibrium found - a hint at the fact that Moss might have overcome his torturing demons?

Intense and energetic

On "Fear Of A Unique Identity", Antimatter's first records for more than four years, Mick Moss seems to follow the only logical path with respect to his recent work. After the critically acclaimed retrospective "Alternative Matter", which in 2010 marked Antimatter's tenth anniversary, he harks back to the electronic sounds from the early days - "Saviour" (2000) as well as "Lights Out" (2003) - without swerving from the Rock-oriented way established with "Leaving Eden" (2007).

For the first time ever in 2012, Mick Moss also presents Antimatter as a complete band (featuring Latvian songstress Vic Anselmo) with which he has recorded a compact cycle of songs with a thematic red thread: In their latest work, Antimatter address social restraints and exclusion, yet not with with a colder sound, but rather the most intense and energetic music the group has created so far. Songs like "Paranova", "Monochrome" or the video track "Uniformed & Black" once more demonstrate Moss' strong songwriting abilities and enlarge upon the serious topic with musical finesse.

With their fourth studio album "Hulders Ritual" ('Ritual of the Huldra'), SLAGMAUR break the chains of repetition and nostalgia by rewriting the rules of black metal. This does not mean abandoning the foundations of the genre, which is already indicated by working with the 'inventor' of the 'Norwegian black metal sound', THORNS mastermind Snorre W. Ruch, as an additional producer. The band's founder, General Gribbsphiiser, rather unafraid and with reckless abandon mutates and warps the traditional formula through a host of subtle innovations and tweaks of the classic sound. Although "Hulders Ritual" continues, refines, and widens the daring stylistic balance of SLAGMAUR's previous works, it adds an extra dimension of sardonic mania to its collection of sharp and vicious sonic instruments. Choice guest-contributions that include TAAKE vocalist Hoest, DIMMU BORGIR guitarist Silenoz, and MISÞYRMING frontman D.G., who cover three decades of Nordic black metal make a case in point. SLAGMAUR hail from Brekstad on the Fosen peninsula in the Trøndelag region and are a part of the Trondheim-based 'Nidrosian black metal movement'. Although Gribbsphiiser started the band as a solo project, he already recruited fellow musicians during the recording of his first demo, "Svin" (2006). SLAGMAUR's black avant-garde debut album, "Skrekk Lich Kunstler" (2007), marked the premier instalment in the still-unfolding series, "The Art of Olderman". The following studio albums "Von Rov Shelter" (2009) and "Thill Smitts Terror" (2017) continued this story arc. "Hulders Ritual" is for those, who are seeking musical darkness, magic, and the relentless breaking of limitations from black metal. SLAGMAUR push forward among the select few that are leading the way to the future of the genre.

While the previous album, "Monuments to Absence" (2023), was deliberately arranged dense, fast and intense, FEN decided to leave breathing space on this album to allow more time for themes and ideas to exhale and unfurl. Of course, there is still much sonic aggression but channelled differently as large parts of "Mourning Earth" were recorded live to allow an organic nature to flow, and to permit the natural rhythms of the pieces to develop. Lyrically, FEN sum up their basic idea behind "Elemental Part One: Mourning Earth" in their own poetic words: "The morning mists clearing over the boggy expanses of the fens to reveal another grey, gloom-laden day of sorrow and regret. And at twilight, the slow, sad realisation that tomorrow promises only more of the same – tormented by the half-heard whispers of the spirits bound to the soils, our pain continues. And we can only endure." DYMNA LOTVA are taking a quantum leap in their rapid musical evolution with their fourth album "Vyraj". The rebellious Belarus dissidents are powerfully demonstrating that they are far more than a 'one-trick pony' in every conceivable artistic aspect. Although "Vyraj" is still based on a solid foundation of black and post-black metal, DYMNA LOTVA move far beyond any easy labelling by also drawing inspiration from doom, heavy, and progressive metal, while venturing even deeper by incorporating elements from electronic music, goth, and folklore. The album is a cornucopia of great songs that are atmospherically dense and invite the listener onto an emotional roller-coaster ride from the darkest depths of depression and fear, via raw anger and defiance, to heights of ecstatic exhilaration. "Vyraj" is a musical kaleidoscope with ever changing patterns and sonic colours of remarkable beauty – that often dissolves into captivating melodies that at times even achieve a pop-like appeal. DYMNA LOTVA continue to carry the torch of rebellion, which is only natural as the founding members had to flee their native Belarus due to political persecution and continued attempts by the Lukashenka regime to censor and suppress their art. Yet on "Vyraj", they put their lyrical focus elsewhere. The album's main concept could be described as 'Belarusian ethno-astronomy.' In Slavonic legends, the starry sky is associated both with the afterlife and with journeys, which becomes closely intertwined with the musicians' personal experience of forced emigration. This idea is captured in the album title "Vyraj", which is a mythical realm to where birds migrate for the winter, and where the souls of the departed find their final rest. DYMNA LOTVA take another big step with "Vyraj" in their breathtakingly rapid artistic evolution. It is easy to predict that this unique and highly original band will soon appear on even bigger festival billings and European stages.
